I have a confession to make: I collect racist memorabilia. Perhaps it is because my mother seems to have as well. She kept a very small ashtray on a table in our living room featuring a Black Sambo figurine at its center. When it comes to the question of whether collecting those racist images is right, I often encounter two strong and diametrically opposed reactions from African Americans. Others think the whole lot should be assembled into one gigantic bonfire, incinerated, and the ashes buried in an impenetrable vault, or strewn over the broadest reach of the deepest ocean never to be displayed again. What makes this shop different from others I have visited is a very thoughtful pamphlet that Deculus-Johnson distributes to her customers, in which she discusses why she collects and sells these items.
P olice shooting and killing Black males is all but a centuries-old American tradition among law enforcement in the U. But the fact that this apparent rite of police passage is still thriving in and only seems to be gaining momentum instead of slowing should give any American citizen pause as an increasing number of Black people — especially males both young and old — continue to be added to a growing list of victims with what seems like a new shooting every week. In recently released footage that showed the lead up to the deadly confrontation, officers can be heard arguing over whether they should stop Reinhold, accusing him of jaywalking. He was a good man murdered by police. He deserves dignity and justice. An year-old Black teen was shot and killed on Jan. Virginia State Troopers claim that Hill attempted to make a U-turn and became stuck in the median.

Last summer, I conducted a little act of sabotage at the preschool where I worked at the time. I noticed a picture collage at one of the classroom doors, a loose assembly of a variety of kids from all over the world. Most of the kids looked happy and healthy. Most of the kids were white. There was only one image of a black child.
